ADMINISTRATIVE REPORT – Teaching and Learning Trimester 3 Update
Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
District 54 utilizes Multi-Tiered Systems of Support for students academically, socially, emotionally and behaviorally. Tier 1 involves whole-class instruction, small group differentiation, and data monitoring. When additional support is needed (Tier 2), student intervention plans are developed during weekly MTSS plan meetings. Students who do not respond to targeted Tier 2 supports (generally 1-5% of students) receive a more intensive Tier 3 intervention.
The behavioral component of MTSS is the PBIS program in District 54 (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports). PBIS, intertwined with the District 54 social-emotional learning curriculum, gives students the tools they need to be safe and successful at school. PBIS relies on proactive, preventative instruction in Tier 1. PBIS also has a second tier for students who need extra support, and a third tier with individualized Behavior Intervention Plans. District 54 believes that discipline is an opportunity for helping students improve their behavior. The ultimate goal is that discipline is fair and restorative, bringing a student back into the school community.
Math Curriculum Implementation
The Math Task Force met on April 9, 2026, to reflect on the first year of using the Origo Stepping Stones and Imagine IM math curriculum, which was approved by the Board in January 2025 and implemented in August 2025. Celebrations included:
- Increased student ownership in the classroom;
- Improved mathematical discourse and math vocabulary;
- Teachers acting as facilitators while students engaged in problem-solving; and
- Improved concept retention due to real world examples, engagement and hands-on opportunities.
For year 2, District 54 staff will focus on incorporating all components of the 60-minute math framework, including numeracy, lesson activities, practice time and reflection. District 54 also will continue to monitor progress and provide professional development to support teachers with refining instruction.
Future Ready Task Force
The Future Ready Task Force was formed this year to prepare students for the evolving educational and workforce landscape. This group of educators from every school, grade level, department and program centered its work on aligning innovative learning skills, social-emotional learning (SEL), and core curriculum standards, with an emphasis on collaboration and adaptability. The group took a deep dive into artificial intelligence (AI), with training on effective prompting, practical applications, and ethical, cognitive, and environmental considerations, while reinforcing academic integrity. Tools, such as the Future Ready Checklist and AI Use Matrix, were introduced to guide purposeful AI use in classrooms.
District 54 will launch a pilot in May to collect data on how students and teachers interact with these tools. Feedback from a junior high student panel stressed the importance of strong teacher relationships and responsible AI use, reinforcing the need for balanced integration. In August, teachers will be introduced to tools and strategies to use for planning. In January 2027, teachers will be trained on how students can leverage future ready tools through Google Classroom. Digital citizenship and responsible device use, including AI considerations, will remain a focus.
Student Device Management for Families
District 54 is exploring parental device management tools that would allow families to monitor usage and restrict sites/apps outside of school hours. A pilot is underway, and feedback will determine if these tools will be made available to families in the 2026-27 school year.
