Student Data Privacy

As part of your child’s education, School District 54 partners with education technology companies to provide services such as digital curriculum, educational resources and analytical tools. School District 54 is committed to ensuring students’ privacy and maintaining the confidentiality of student data.

Effective July 1, 2021, Illinois school districts are required by the Student Online Personal Protection Act (SOPPA) to provide additional guarantees that student data is protected when collected by educational technology companies, and that data is used for beneficial purposes only (105 ILCS 85/). In compliance, School District 54 only collects information that directly relates to school activities and safeguards the privacy of students and confidentiality of student data.

SOPPA requires that school districts enter into written agreements with all third-party providers who collect student data and post a list of what data is shared, as well as access to written agreements/contracts with the provider. District 54 will post this information for any new vendor within 10 days of signing a contract with that vendor. In addition, school districts are required to ensure that student data is protected through comprehensive privacy policies and security measures such as firewalls, secure servers, and other methods. Written agreements with vendors require that the vendor also maintains security procedures.
