Recognition
The Board of Education presented Ambassador for Excellence Awards to the following students.
- Ericka Serio, a seventh-grade student at Frost Junior High School, who received the Village of Schaumburg Volunteer of the Year Award in the youth category for her involvement in the school’s Interact Club and the connections she has created across the community.
- Two students worked together to create a film called Together in Harmony – a Celebration of Teamwork, which was featured in the Schaumburg Screen Test Jr. competition. Samika Pohare, a fifth-grade student at Nerge Elementary School, wrote the film and it was directed by Atharv Kumar, a fourth-grade Hoover student.
The Board of Education also presented an Above and Beyond Award to Kimberly Koch, the nurse at Hale Elementary School. She was nominated by a Hale parent for the care provided to her son and the support provided to the parent after the child was diagnosed with a medical condition.

Freedom of Information Act Requests
District 54 received and replied to one Freedom of Information Act request since the last report to the Board, related to contracts with Evolv and CEIA.
Consent Agenda
The Board approved the following items on the Consent Agenda.
- Resignations, leaves, termination, retirements, employment, re-employment and salary adjustments of personnel
- Checks dated April 5 and 19, 2024
- The treasurer’s reports on cash and investments for March and April 2024
- The monthly update of revenues and expenditures for April 2024
- The purchase of a treasurer’s bond for 2024-2025
- A voluntary parent-purchased student accident insurance plan for the 2024-2025 school year
- The 2024-2025 Workers’ Compensation insurance policy
- A contract with Bob’s Dairy for the supply and delivery of milk to 28 schools for the 2024-2025, 2025-2026, and 2026-2027 school years
- A contract with Cintas for mop and towel service to all District 54 locations for the 2024-2025, 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school years
- A contract with Dell for 760 desktop computers for the 2024-2025 school year
- The second installment of a three-year agreement for the purchase of 27 DreamBox software licenses for the 2024-2025 school year
- The purchase of technology software licensing and support
President’s Report
Board President Jim Pye reported that District 54 hosted its annual Special Olympics Unified Sports Day for students in grades 4-8 on May 10. Our younger students, who participate in the Young Athletes program, will have their event tomorrow, May 17.
Other events include the annual District 54 rocket launch on May 13 and 15, at which more than 750 rockets were launched; eighth-grade graduations on June 2; and the last day of school for all other students on June 3.
Jim congratulated the following individuals who received Distinguished Service Awards from the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association: Muir Behavior Coach Kim Miller; Aldrin PTA President Marisol Guevara; Barb Velez, the administrative assistant in the Department of Language and Culture; nine students who served on the Illinois Special Olympics Youth Activation Committee; and 62 employees who serve as Unified Club sponsors.
Congratulations to Board Member Mary Kay Prusnick who had a tree planted in her honor near Fox School for years of volunteer service to the Village of Hanover Park.
Congratulations to Stevenson Teacher Julianne Collier who received the 2024 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching this month.
DCAC Report
Board Member Barb Hengels reported that the District Citizens’ Advisory Committee had a presentation on summer camps in District 54.
ED-RED Report
Board Member Mary Kay Prusnick encourage board members to attend the ED-RED Mini Summit on June 12, which features two presentations from District 54 representatives, one on leadership and another on culture.
D54 Foundation Report
Board Member Mary Kay Prusnick reminded everyone that the annual D54 Foundation Golf Outing is on June 10. Golf is sold out but people can still sign up for the dinner.
New Business
- The Board approved the minutes of the regular and closed session Board of Education meetings on April 11, 2024.
- The Board approved the resolution appointing Steve Miller as the District 54 Treasurer from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2026.
- The Board Policy Committee brought the following policy for a first reading: 1.60 – Prohibition of Sexual Harassment, Title IX Grievance.
- The Board approved revisions to the following policies:
- 4:260 – Receipt of Cash at District Sites
- 5:390 – Smoking and Use of Tobacco Products or E-Cigarettes
- 5:400 – Care and Return of District Property by Employees,
- 5:410 – Employee Benefits for Employee Groups Not Covered by Negotiated Agreements,
- 7:370 – Student Absences and Homework and
- 7:390 – Prohibition of Electronic Communication or Entertainment Devices and Cellular Telephones.
- The Board approved a contract with Singlewire Software to purchase its Visitor Aware visitor management system and InformaCast security management system.
Announcements
Board members highlighted several District 54 events including the Frost Walk-a-Thon, musicals at Stevenson and Churchill, District 54 Student Ambassador Training, and the SEA/SEEO General meeting.
The Board also congratulated the high school seniors who received a 2024 Schaumburg Township Council of PTAs scholarship and spoke about their favorite teachers and memories in District 54.
