3 – Proficient: Includes some components of selected mode of speech; topic is clear for most of the speech; includes some personal anecdotes and/or quotes; topic is interesting and relatable.

2 – Basic: Components of selected mode of speech are not clear; topic is clear in some parts of the speech; speech may or may not include personal anecdotes or quotes; topic is familiar.

1 – Not there yet: There is no clear mode presented; topic is not clear; speech does not include personal anecdotes or quotes; topic is not familiar or engaging to the audience.

Organization

4 – Advanced: Sequencing of details is effective and logical; excellent use of transitions for natural flow; ideas are well-organized and clear throughout.

3 – Proficient: Adequate sequencing of details; general use of transitions; ideas are somewhat organized and clear for most of the speech.

2 – Basic: Sequencing is limited; limited number of transitions; presentation of ideas needs reorganization.

1 – Not there yet: Sequencing needs major revision; transitions are not evident; presentation lacks organization and clarity.

Language Control

4 – Advanced: Variety of topic-specific sentences and vocabulary; main points use precise and natural words/phrases throughout.

3 – Proficient: Variety of sentences and vocabulary; main points use precise words/phrases in most of the speech.

2 – Basic: Contains simple sentences and vocabulary; words and phrases make sense but are not precise or natural.

4 – Advanced: Speaker interacts with audience throughout (eye contact, gestures, etc.); audience can hear speaker throughout.

2 – Basic: Interacts with audience sometimes; audience may have difficulty hearing during certain parts.

4 – Advanced: The speech is fully memorized.

3 – Proficient: Mostly memorized; might pause to use notes.
