A District 54 parent asked the School Board to support joining the Illinois Elementary School Association.
IESA Membership and Participation
District 54 provided information to the School Board on the Illinois Elementary School Association, which organizes statewide tournaments for middle school/junior high age students in a variety of sports. The School Board directed the district to continue to explore joining this organization, including seeking input from stakeholders.
Freedom of Information Act Requests
District 54 received and replied to nine Freedom of Information Act request since the last report to the Board.
Consent Agenda
The Board approved the following items on the Consent Agenda.
- The minutes of the regular and closed-session Board of Education meetings on June 5, 2025
- The minutes of the special open and closed-session Board of Education meetings on July 16, 2025
- Resignations, leaves, dismissal, employment and salary adjustments of personnel
- Checks dated June 13, June 27, July 11 and July 25, 2025
- The treasurer’s reports on cash and investments for May 2025 and June 2025
- The monthly update of revenues and expenditures for June 2025
- The purchase of property, casualty and liability insurance coverage for 2025-2026 from Liberty Mutual and cyber coverage from Houston Casualty Company
- The purchase of technology software licensing and support
- The destruction of the verbatim records of the closed-session school board meetings held on January 18, 2024, for which approved minutes already exist
President’s Report
Board President Nick Scipione thanked all staff who worked over the summer to prepare for the start of the school year next week. District 54 is hosting its Induction Week this week welcoming 91 new employees to the district. He also thanked Schaumburg Township for hosting its annual Pack the Bus event to collect school supplies for District 54 students and those who volunteered at the event.
DCAC Report
Board Member Bob Kaplan thanked Board Member Barb Hengels for her commitment to the District Citizens’ Advisory Committee over the years. There are seven candidates being voted on tonight, who have been on DCAC in the past. The committee is always seeking new members. Interested individuals can fill out the DCAC online form.
ED-RED Report
Board Member Mary Kay Prusnick thanked ED-RED for hosting a legislative breakfast last week allowing school district representatives could connect with state legislators. She also encouraged the Board to complete the ED-RED initiative survey, asking representatives to indicate what legislation is important to their school districts.
D54 Foundation
Board Member Jim Pye asked everyone to support the District 54 Education Foundation, who will be parking cars at Collins on Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend during Schaumburg’s Septemberfest, and will be hosting a food booth at the festival on Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 1). The Foundation is also promoting its annual Run to Read, which will be held on Sept. 28 at Dirksen School. More information can be found online at d54foundation.org.
New Business
- The Board adopted the 2025-2026 budget.
- The Board adopted a resolution directing the superintendent to prepare the 2026-27 budget in tentative form.
- The Board appointed representatives to serve on the District Citizens Advisory Committee for the 2025-2026 school year.
- The Board approved District 54’s membership in the Bartlett Area Chamber of Commerce, the Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce, the Schaumburg Business Association, the Greater O’Hare Area (GOA) Regional Business Association, ED-RED, the Midwest Principals’ Center and the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB).
- District 54 provided the School Board with Memoranda of Information on the following topics.
Announcements
The Board spoke about a number of community events they attended and thanked those organizations for inviting them. They also praised the students who performed in the District 54 Instrumental Music Camp concerts in July.

The Board adjourned at 8:47 p.m. to enter closed session for employment/appointment matters and the semi-annual review of minutes of closed-session meetings.
