District 54 joins with millions today who are commemorating African American freedom and celebrating the achievements of Black Americans, including those of our Black students and staff. People have been celebrating Juneteenth since 1865, when on June 19 Union soldiers landed in Galveston, TX, with news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were to be freed. This year, Juneteenth became a state and federal holiday.
