World Language Instruction
Chinese Immersion
A Mandarin Chinese immersion program will begin in August 2011 at Campanelli School in Schaumburg. Students in kindergarten will have the option of learning in Chinese and English through this immersion setting. During the 2010-11 school year, Campanelli will offer the Mandarin Chinese program in kindergarten only. However, one grade level will be added each school year. The goal of this program is for students to communicate effectively in both languages by the time they exit the school at the end of sixth grade. For more information, call Principal Steve Kern at (847) 357-5333 or visit the Campanelli Chinese Immersion website.
World Language
World Language classes are offered at all junior high schools in District 54 as a full year course in seventh and eighth grades.
World Cultures
World Cultures classes are offered at junior high schools for seventh- and eighth-graders in District 54 as a 12-week trimester course to provide students with an opportunity to study the geography, history, government, art, food, economics and social systems of major cultural regions. Through this study, students will gain a deeper understanding of their own country’s culture and the world around them.
Dual Language
The Dual Language Program is unique because all children in the classroom learn two languages and cultures. It is comprised of two groups of students, native English speakers and native speakers of a language other than English. Each student is both a language expert and a language learner. District 54 has an English-Spanish Dual Language program at MacArthur, Enders-Salk, Hanover Highlands, Link, Eisenhower and Keller schools, and an English-Japanese Dual Language program at Dooley and Addams schools.
