Research has identified MUSIC as a basic area of
intelligence and the State of Illinois requires it as a basic subject area. The
general music program in School District 54 serves all students in grades 1-6. Through
listening, singing, moving, creating, and playing classroom instruments, students develop
and refine their skills in the music concepts of rhythm, melody, beat/meter,
form/structure, dynamics, tempo, articulation, tone color, harmony, tonality, texture,
style and culture. Each class has two 30 minute music lessons a week. The
music text currently used in these grades is "Spotlight on Music" by McGraw-Hill.
Efforts are always made to integrate music instruction with specific themes being
studied in other curricular areas and multicultural music is presented in all classes
throughout the year. Formal instrumental instruction begins in 5th grade and is
taught by District 54 Instrumental Music staff. |
