Public Participation at Board Meetings

Citizens are invited to attend District 54 board meetings and to express their views on subjects related to the operation of the school system. Public schools have historically been guided and maintained through local control. In keeping with this tradition, the School Board actively seeks the advice and counsel of citizens.

The School Board provides time at its regular meetings for citizens to express interest in and concerns about District 54 schools. As a taxpayer, you are part owner in the public school system.

If you wish to address the School Board, fill out a form located on the back table in the boardroom. The forms, which are given to the board president, request your name and address.

The board president will ask individuals to come to the microphone. The audience may not address the board during its deliberation of issues.

When you are recognized, state your name and address, any organization you represent and the topic about which you wish to speak. Audience comments are limited to five minutes and the president reserves the right to limit the number of individuals or groups recognized to speak. The board also welcomes written statements.

After the audience member is done speaking, a board member or administrator will offer a short explanation or take the comments under advisement and follow up at a later date.

Matters concerning an individual school should be discussed first with the principal at the school. If the problem cannot be resolved at the school, it should be brought to the attention of the superintendent, Ed Rafferty.
