Hoover receives School of the Year energy award

Posted Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

The National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project Board of Directors named the Hoover Math and Science Academy the Illinois Elementary Level School of the Year and invited representative from the school to recognition ceremonies June 24-27 in Washington, D.C.

All NEED schools have outstanding classroom-based programs in which students learn about energy. This program combines academic competition with recognition to recognize those who achieve excellence in energy education in their schools and communities. The students and teachers set goals and objectives, and keep a record of their activities. In April, the students combine their materials into scrapbooks and send them to their state coordinators. The students themselves write summaries of their projects for inclusion in the Annual Report.

Hoover was chosen for “The Energy Zoo” an energy education project organized by advisers Karen White and Gloria Cole. White and Cole run the SHARE program, which stands for Students at Hoover Acting Responsibly for the Earth, its Environment and its Energy.

The students in the program created bulletin boards with a conservation and zoo theme. The bulletin boards featured items such as Penny Panda pondering plastic and Walter Walrus wondering about water.

SHARE also organized a week’s worth of energy education. The week included Make-a-Choice Monday (count plastic bags littering the school), Take-a-Hike Tuesday (earn energy coupons for the SHARE store), Waste-Free Wednesday, Think-Hard Thursday (Are You Smarter than a S.H.A.R.E. Kid? and Energy Bingo) and Freshen-up Friday (bring in plastic bags to recycle, buy a reusable bag or water bottle, clean up all your environments).
